Heartland Bank continues to lead the 12-month rate market with its one-year rate of 4.25% p.a. according to the Savings.com.au database, although that applies to deposit amounts between $25,000 to under $1 million with interest paid end of term.
Why are term deposit rates heading higher?
Rates on the term deposit market have been trending upwards as the prospect of a near-term cut to the 3.6% cash rate evaporates.
After its last meeting on Melbourne Cup Day, Reserve Bank governor Michele Bullock said it's a possibility there will be no more rate cuts in the current downcycle.
It's a view shared with many economists as the Australian economy gains steam with household incomes lifting, the jobs market remaining tight, and inflation once again on the rise.
With banks not expecting any more cuts to the cash rate, many may be looking to attract stable sources of funding, particularly given the heat in the home lending market.
