Data sourced from Zip and Neilsen's Retail Barometer Report suggests shoppers will be heading into stores to treat themselves in the sales, despite signs of a slowdown in retail spending.

However, just under half (45%) of those intending to shop the sales are planning on heading into stores to browse rather than look online.

This is a higher percentage than those who plan on searching for bargains online, through websites and apps (41%).

Nearly a quarter (23%) of respondents said they would begin their planning for how best to tackle the sales one or two weeks before the big day.

Buy now pay later brands like Zip will be anticipating a busy post-Christmas period, with three out of four BNPL users surveyed intending to shop the sales.

Zip's Chief Marketing Officer, Debbie Wine, said that this willingness to spend was a consequence of the constraints of the pandemic period.

"Through our research, we've seen that Australians are getting ready to celebrate with their loved ones and enjoy themselves this holiday season after two years of restrictions," Ms Wine said.

"Australian shoppers are planning their Boxing Day spending to make the most of their great sales because they are smart shoppers."

How are bargain-hunters going to spend their money?

The average shopper is expected to spend around $231 on clothes alone.

Fashion is expected to be the most popular purchase category, with 71% of respondents suggesting they would be looking for clothes.

The second most popular response was groceries and liquor.

Around 58% of shoppers would be stocking up on food and booze, with an expected average outlay of $174.

Beauty and health was a priority for 48% of respondents, expected to spend around $141 each.
